Curriculum
Why It Works

The Problem
Today’s students are growing up in a culture filled with pressure, confusion, and conflicting messages about relationships, identity, sex, and success. Many young people want healthy futures, meaningful relationships, and stable families, but often lack the guidance and tools needed to make decisions that support those goals.
Research continues to show concerning trends among teens and young adults:
Over 150,000 teenage girls become pregnant each year
1 in 4 sexually active teens are infected with an STI/STD
Teens engaging in risky behaviors are more likely to experience substance abuse, depression, and school struggles
Father absence has become a leading indicator for poverty in America
Students today are also heavily influenced by social media, technology, peer pressure, and cultural messaging that often promotes impulsive decision-making rather than long-term thinking and healthy relationships.
Our Solution
The Common Sense Culture Program (CSC) equips students with practical life skills and character-based education that help them build healthy relationships and make informed decisions.
Through engaging, medically-accurate, and age-appropriate instruction, CSC teaches:

Healthy relationship skills

Goal setting and future planning

Decision-making and character development

The impact of media and peer influence

Sexual risk avoidance

Substance abuse prevention

The value of healthy family formation
Results & outcomes
CSC has impacted thousands of students throughout Franklin and Fairfield counties, serving over 5,000 youth across more than 30 schools.
CSC also emphasizes what researchers refer to as the “Success Sequence”:
Graduate High School
Work a Full-Time Job
Get Married Before Having Children
Research highlighted by CSC found that millennials who followed this sequence were overwhelmingly likely to avoid poverty, with only 3% remaining in poverty.
Research Backing
CSC’s curriculum and teaching approach are built on research and nationally-recognized youth development principles. The program incorporates findings from organizations and studies focused on teen health, family stability, media influence, and adolescent development.
Research referenced by CSC includes:
University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future surveys
National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy
National Fatherhood Initiative
Kaiser Family Foundation studies on media influence and youth behavior
The program also utilizes medically-accurate, age-appropriate education focused on prevention, healthy relationships, and positive youth development.
Curriculum topics include:
Prevention of sexual abuse and dating violence
Refusal and boundary-setting skills
Effects of pornography and sexting
Healthy communication and family relationships
Future planning and resilience-building
By combining research, practical life skills, and engaging instruction, CSC helps students build foundations for healthier futures and stronger communities.
